Online ESL jobs are popular right now. These jobs are especially inviting for moms who want to work from home.
Most ESL teaching jobs require a bachelor’s degree, but what if you don’t have a degree? It’s okay!
If you’re interested in an ESL job, but you don’t have a degree, you’re in luck. There are a few companies around that allow you to tutor English without having a college education.
Even though they don’t require a college degree, some of these companies will still require that you have a language teaching certification, such as TEFL or TESOL.
You’ll need to take the 120-hour course and become certified before you can work with some of these companies. And, you don’t need a bachelor’s degree to get a language teaching certificate.
What is ESL?
ESL is English as a second language.
ESL teachers teach English to students whose native language is not English.
Many of the elementary schools, here in the United States, offer ESL classes for students whose first language isn’t English.
And now, many companies are hiring ESL teachers to teach English to students of all ages worldwide, online via webcam.
Education and Requirements Needed
You don’t need a college degree for these companies, but you must have a high school diploma or a GED.
They will also require you to have a language teaching certification such as a TEFL or TESOL.
You can obtain a language teaching certification without a bachelor’s degree.
TEFL Professional Development Institute offers a free 120-hour TEFL certification course.
It’s important to keep in mind; there are online language certification courses that aren’t 120 hours. I don’t recommend them.
Official TEFL and TESOL certification classes are 120 hours. Any class that is less than 120 hours may not qualify you, and a company may deny you employment.
Equipment Needed
You need to have a quiet work area, a desktop or laptop computer, a webcam, and a headset.
You’ll also need to have reliable, high-speed internet. Some of these companies may require that your internet is hard-wired.
Some companies will require you to have props such as stuffed animals, a dry erase board and markers, flashcards, or puppets.
Be sure to read the technical requirements to see what each company requires.
What’s the Pay?
The pay varies by company; however, it’s typically anywhere from $10 to $26 per hour.Â
