Work at Home Medical Billing and Coding Jobs

I make money on some of the products and services I mention on Thinking Frugal through affiliate relationships. I never endorse a product or service unless I believe it will benefit my readers.

For those of you wanting to work from home and are curious about medical billing and coding, this post should answer your questions.

These jobs are quite popular with women and can easily be done from home, but you’ll need training first.

What do Medical Billers and Coders Do?

Medical billing and medical coding are actually two different processes, but they work in tandem. One person can do both billing and coding, or one person can bill, while someone else codes.

Medical coding is analyzing the medical records of patients and translating the diagnosis, procedures, etc. into the standard medical codes.

Medical billing is taking the information, putting it into claim form, and submitting it to the insurance company for payment.

Education Needed for Medical Billing and Coding

To work in the medical billing and coding field, you’ll need to successfully complete a certified medical billing and coding program which is usually offered by local community colleges. Technical schools also usually offer this program and there are online programs as well.

Some companies may require you to have either an associate degree or a bachelor’s degree as well as a certification.

You can find information on certification programs by visiting American Health Information Management Association and American Academy of Professional Coders. They’re both healthcare professional organizations that offer resources and information for becoming certified.

What is the Pay?

The pay for medical billers and coders can vary according to education, experience level, and where you live. According to Glassdoor’s website, the average salary in the United States is $33,716 per year.

American Academy of Professional Coders shows the average yearly salary for each state, which is somewhat higher than Glassdoor’s.
