If you’re tech-savvy, really good at troubleshooting issues with electronics and personal devices, and good at explaining how to fix them then maybe working from home in a technical support position is the perfect role for you.

Many companies hire technical support representatives to work from home these days, and I’ve put together a list of some of those companies.

 

What is Technical Support?

Basically, technical support is helping customers to troubleshoot and fix specific issues or problems they may be having with a company’s products or services.

The products and services can range from computers, tablets, and cell phones, to software or even website subscription services such as Netflix or Roku.

Education and Skills Needed

You must have a least a high school diploma or GED. Some companies will require a bachelor’s degree especially if the position is extremely technical and detailed.

Skills required include excellent communication both verbally and written, outstanding customer service skills, patience, and knowledge of hardware and software.

What is the Pay?

The pay will be dependent upon several factors such as the company, your education level, any previous experience, and the specific role. Positions that require more education and technical expertise will obviously pay higher than an entry-level position with no prior experience.

Glassdoor states the average salary for a technical support representative in the United States is $32,825, or roughly $15.78 per hour. 

Where to Find Work at Home Technical Support Jobs

 

2U

2U was founded in 2008 and is based in Maryland. This company specializes in cloud-based education technology services. They hire remote technical support specialists. Most of these are part-time positions and they hire for different shifts. They prefer you to have a bachelor’s degree, but it’s not a requirement, however, they do require between 1 and 3 years of technical support experience.

AdviseTech

AdviseTech provides IT solutions services to businesses 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. They hire IT technicians to work from home and service their clients. You’ll need to have at least 10 years of previous technical support experience to be considered for this role.

Alorica

Alorica is headquartered in Irvine, CA, and offers call center services to its business clients. They service several industries such as healthcare, retail, financial services, and travel & hospitality. They regularly hire technical support agents to work from.

Automattic

Automattic has been in business since 2005 and is headquartered in San Francisco. This company is the developer of the popular blogging platform WordPress and they’re also 100% remote. They hire remote happiness engineers for customer service and technical support roles to help customers through live chat, support tickets, and screen share software. To be considered for a position with them, you must be proficient in CSS, HTML, and WordPress. You must also have excellent communication skills and have a knowledge and understanding of technical language. They’re available to assist their customers 24/7, so they have a collection of shifts. 

Awesome Motive

Awesome Motive is headquartered in West Palm Beach, Florida, and specializes in software development for small businesses. They hire WordPress technical support representatives to work from home assisting users with their products. To be considered for a position, you must have at least 2 years of experience with WordPress. They also require knowledge of CSS and HTML, along with experience working with email marketing providers like MailChimp. These positions are open to almost anywhere in the world. 

Bullhorn

Bullhorn specializes in cloud-computing services. They hire technical support analysts to work from home to assist their customers with their software products. They offer 6 weeks of extensive training and the starting pay for this position is $16.34 per hour.

Conduent

Conduent offers call center services to their clients. They hire technical support associates to work from home researching and helping customers to troubleshoot technical issues they’re having. To be considered for this position, you must have a high school diploma or GED and be able to type at least 30 WPM.

Frontline

Frontline offers call center services to its clients. They also offer help desk services and they frequently hire technical support representatives to work from home.

GreenGeeks

GreenGeeks specializes in web hosting services. They hire remote technical support representatives to assist their customers via telephone and live chat. They require at least 3 years of prior experience in the web hosting industry, along with cPanel/WHM experience. Since they offer support to their customers 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, you’ll need to be flexible with your schedule.

HubSpot

HubSpot develops software products for marketing companies. They hire remote technical support specialists to assist users with their products via telephone, live chat, and email, in order to diagnose software issues. To be eligible for this position, you must be familiar with software concepts, have a technical aptitude, and have knowledge of APIs, CSS, and HTML.

Jack Henry and Associates

Jack Henry and Associates hires technical support representatives to work from home. The amount of experience required depends, but for most positions, they require at least 18 months of previous experience.

Kelly Services

Kelly Services is a large, well-known staffing agency. They hire technical support representatives to work from home, in both telephone and chat positions, to assist customers who are having issues with their devices. They require a high school diploma and at least 6 months of prior customer service experience in order to be considered. The starting pay is $13 to $15 per hour.

Modern Tribe

Modern Tribe offers digital services to businesses. They hire remote WordPress technical support agents to assist customers with their websites. To be considered for this position, they require knowledge of PHP, HTML, CSS, and JavaScript. They also require previous experience with GitHub.

ModSquad

ModSquad Based in California, ModSquad offers social media services to brands and has been in business since 2007. They occasionally hire technical support specialists to work from home assisting customers using Vimeo. All assistance is done through email or live chat. They allow the use of WiFi as long as it’s secured and high-speed. 

OneSupport

OneSupport provides call center services to businesses. They hire technical support representatives to work from home assisting customers via telephone, chat, and email. They require a typing speed of at least 40 WPM, the ability to multitask, and excellent communication skills. No previous technical support experience is required.

ReCharge Payments

ReCharge Payments is payment and subscription software for e-commerce store owners. They hire technical customer support reps to work from home helping store owners to troubleshoot and resolve technical issues through live chat, email, and occasional telephone calls. In order to be considered for a position with them, you must have at least 2 years of previous technical support experience with a SaaS or similar company. They also require that you have basic CSS, Javascript, and HTML knowledge.

Sitel

Sitel is a call center services company. They hire remote customer service professionals for technical support roles to assist customers by troubleshooting and resolving issues with software.

Transcom

Transcom is a call center services company that is headquartered in Sweden and has 50 call centers around the world. They hire technical support agents to work from home. They don’t require any previous technical support experience to be considered, however, it’s preferred. To apply, you must be at least 18 years old, have a high school diploma or GED, and be able to type at least 40 correct words per minute.

Uscreen

Uscreen is an online platform that allows users to build their own video websites. They hire technical support and success representatives to work from home. To be considered, they require at least 2 years of experience in customer service, and previous experience in Saas, and HTML.

Vivint Smart Home 

Vivint Smart Home is headquartered in Utah and has been in business since 2011. This company specializes in providing smart home services such as cameras, and home automation to its customers. They hire customer solutions tech support representatives to work from home assisting customers in troubleshooting and resolving technical issues. To be considered for this position, you must have a high school diploma, be able to type at least 30 words per minute, and have an understanding of computers and technology. The starting pay is $11 per hour. 

WP Buffs

This company specializes in outsourced technical support for the blogging platform WordPress. They hire technical support representatives to work from home assisting WordPress users with issues they are having. In order to be considered for this position, you must have at least 2 years of experience working with WordPress and at least 1 year of previous customer service experience. They offer support 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, so you’ll need to have open availability with your schedule. The pay for this position depends on experience, technical skills, and location.
