Work at Home ESL Jobs

I make money on some of the products and services I mention on Thinking Frugal through affiliate relationships. I never endorse a product or service unless I believe it will benefit my readers.

There are a lot of companies that hire ESL teachers to work from. These types of jobs have gained in popularity over the last several years because globally, English is one of the most popular foreign languages to learn.

These are great work-from-home jobs for moms because they are very flexible and allow you the freedom to choose your own hours.

What is ESL?

ESL is English as a second language.

ESL teachers teach English to students whose native language is not English.

Many of the elementary schools, here in the United States, offer ESL classes for students whose first language isn’t English.

Now, many companies are hiring ESL teachers to teach English to students of all ages around the world, online via webcam.

 Education and Requirements Needed

The educational requirements will depend on the type of ESL job you’re interested in, such as teaching ESL to students in a public school vs teaching to adults through private tutoring. Also, each state may have its own set of requirements.

However, for the companies listed here, most will require a bachelor’s degree in any subject. They will also require a language teaching certification such as a TESL, TEFL, or TESOL.

You can obtain a language teaching certification without a bachelor’s degree.

TEFL Professional Development Institute offers a free 120-hour TEFL certification course.

 Equipment Needed

You need to have a quiet work area, a desktop or laptop computer, a webcam, and a headset. You’ll also need to have reliable, high-speed internet. Some of these companies may require that your internet is hard-wired.

Some companies will require you to have props such as stuffed animals, a dry erase board and markers, flashcards, or puppets.

Be sure to read the technical requirements to see what each company requires.

 What’s the Pay?

The pay varies by company, however, it’s typically anywhere from $10 to $26 per hour.
