The company has been in business since 2013 and is headquartered in Beijing, China. And they are one of the leading online education companies in China.
VIPKid hires native English-speaking teachers who are legal citizens of the United States and Canada to teach English online to students, ages 4 to 12, living in China.
The best part is teachers don’t have to create their own curriculum because the company furnishes its own lesson plans.

Education and Qualifications Needed
The qualifications required to become an online ESL teacher include:
- Must hold a bachelor’s degree in any subject.
- You must have at least two years of teaching experience. This can be any type of teaching, mentoring, coaching, or tutoring of any kind. This includes any online instruction.
- Must be a United States or Canadian citizen.
Technical Requirements
The technical requirements required for this position include:
- Must have a desktop, laptop, Macbook, iPad, or Microsoft Surface.Â
- Must have Windows 7, 8, or 10; Mac OS 10. X or higher operating system.Â
- Your processor must be Intel i5 or higher.
- Must have at least 8GB RAM.
- You must have reliable, high-speed internet service. The company prefers hard-wired.
- HD Webcam.
- Headset and a microphone.
- They prefer you have a bright, fun educational background.
Work Schedules
The company recommends that you be available to work a minimum of 7.5 hours each week.
The times you will need to be available to work are Monday-Friday between 6:00 PM and 9:00 PM, and Saturday/Sunday between 9:00 AM and 9:00 PM Beijing time. Depending on what time zone you are located in, this can be anywhere from 1:00 AM to 6:00 AM. You can see the times for different time zones by going here.
You are free to choose when you want to work (and how much) anytime between those hours.
Each class lasts for 25 minutes.
Training
No training is provided, but the company offers videos and tips that you will need to watch during the application process. You will also have to take a quiz after the videos.
Pay and Benefits
The pay for this position is $14-18 per hour plus incentives. Teachers can earn incentives by teaching more classes and referring new teachers, so the pay can be up to $22 per hour with those incentives.
You’re able to choose if you’d like to be paid weekly, bi-weekly, or monthly, and payment is made directly to your bank account or to your PayPal account.
This position is an independent contractor (1099) job, so there are no benefits offered.
