Employee vs Independent Contractor

I make money on some of the products and services I mention on Thinking Frugal through affiliate relationships. I never endorse a product or service unless I believe it will benefit my readers.

Before you start looking for a work-at-home job, you should probably ask yourself several questions. One of them is, do you want to work as an employee or as an independent contractor?

There are benefits to both, but you need to figure out which is more beneficial to YOU.

Do you need benefits? Do you need to set your own schedule? Do you want to be responsible for your own taxes? These are important questions you’ll need to consider when searching for a remote job.

Let’s take a look a the differences between the two.

What is an Employee?

Employees actually work for the company. They can be either hourly or salaried. The company takes out federal, state, and employment taxes from each paycheck and files them with the federal, state, and local governments. At the end of the year, the company sends a W-2.

Also, employees can be subject to overtime and usually receive benefits such as health insurance, sick leave, and vacation pay.

Employees also have legal protections like worker’s compensation and unemployment.

What is an Independent Contractor?

Independent contractors are basically freelancers. When an independent contractor does work for a company, they are contracted and not considered actually “employed” by the company.

Independent contractors can be contracted with more than one company at a time. They are usually free to work when they want as long as the work is completed by the scheduled time, although this is not necessarily true in all cases.

Independent contractors are usually considered self-employed and must pay their own taxes. The company sends them a 1099 tax statement at the end of the year. Even though an independent contractor may receive an hourly wage, they must keep track of the hours they work each week and submit an invoice to the company in order to be paid.

Also, independent contractors don’t receive any benefits from the company, such as paid time off or health insurance. They must buy their own insurance.

Independent contractors don’t have the legal protections that employees have, such as unemployment compensation and worker’s compensation.

The federal government has guidelines that companies must go by in determining if a worker is an employee or an independent contractor. If you’d like to read them, you can visit the IRS website here.
