What is a Telephone Interpreter?

Telephone interpreters assist customers by being the liaison between the customer and a company.

An example of that could be a customer who needs to speak to a customer service representative at their bank. The customer doesn’t speak or understand English very well, so the customer service representative can get an interpreter on the phone to translate. The interpreter is able to tell the customer service representative what the customer is saying and tells the customer what the CSR is saying, thereby assisting the customer with their needs.

Education and Skills Needed

You must have at least a high school diploma or a GED.

You must be proficient in English and at least 1 other language both in writing and verbally.

You must have excellent communication skills, excellent listening skills, and excellent multi-tasking skills.

Equipment Needed

Since this job involves being on the telephone, you’ll need to have a quiet work area that is free from distractions and outside noise.

You must have a desktop or laptop computer, reliable high-speed internet service, a headset, and either VoIP or landline telephone service. If the company requires landline telephone service, then you’ll also need to have a telephone.

Companies will differ according to what equipment they require. Some may require a landline, while others will allow VoIP.

How Much do Telephone Interpreters Make?

The pay will depend on your experience and the company you work for, but it can range anywhere from $13 to $33 per hour.

These positions are independent contractor jobs and you’re free to choose your own schedule. The hourly pay can range from $12 to $18 per hour.

Globo offers telephone and video interpreting services. They hire remote telephone interpreters for many different languages. In order to be considered for this position, you must be located in the United States and have either landline telephone service, or high-speed internet service with VoIP to make calls through your computer. You must also have at least 2 years of previous interpreting experience.

International Effectiveness Center is headquartered in California and has been in business since 1972. They offer language services to businesses and organizations doing business internationally. They hire professional interpreters to work from home. In order to be considered for a position with them, you must take and pass a skills assessment.

Interpreters and Translators Inc has been in business for over 30 years and offers linguist services to many different industries. In order to be considered for an interpreter position, you’ll need to complete the application and they’ll contact you if you’re a good fit.

Language Link offers translation and interpreting services 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. They hire remote independent contractors. In order to qualify for a position with them, you must be able to interpret in a variety of subjects, including social, legal, and medical. They require you to have a landline telephone.

Language Service Associates has been in business since 1991. They hire remote telephonic and ASL (American Sign Language) interpreters. They require at least 2 years’ of previous professional interpreting experience in order to be considered.

They don’t require any previous experience in order to be considered for a position. Glassdoor shows the hourly pay for this company can range from $8 to $26 per hour.

Lionbridge is a software company based in Massachusetts and has been in business since 1996. They hire remote freelance interpreters. They don’t require any previous interpreting experience to be considered for a telephonic interpreter position. The hourly pay for freelance interpreters can range from $20 to $44 per hour.

Metlang has been in business since 1990 and they specialize in offering linguist services to law enforcement agencies. 

MultiLingual Solutions

MultiLingual Solutions offers translation and interpreting services worldwide and they’ve been in business since 2001. In order to be considered for a remote freelance position with them, you’ll need to register and complete the application, and wait to hear back from them.
