What Does a Mock Juror Do?

Basically, mock jurors are participants in a focus group, called a mock jury, for an upcoming trial.

Attorneys use mock juries as a way to gauge how the actual trial may go by evaluating the actions and responses of the mock jurors.

The mock jurors get to see all the evidence and listen to pre-recorded presentations and statements. Just like in a real trial, attorneys for both sides state their case, and the mock jurors must decide on a verdict.

This allows attorneys to predict the reactions and the verdict of the actual trial.

Mock juries are very similar to real juries because the participants in a mock jury are chosen according to jurisdiction and demographics.
Attorneys want to make sure no mock juror has any preconceived bias and therefore potential mock jurors must complete a rather lengthy survey.

Mock Juror Qualifications 

You don’t need any special qualifications to serve as a mock juror, however, you do need to meet certain criteria.

• You must be a citizen of the United States
• You must be at least 18 years of age
• You must be able to read and write
• You must not have any felony convictions or currently be formally charged with any crimes
• You must not be associated or employed by an attorney or law firm in any capacity

How Much Does It Pay?

The amount of money paid to an online mock juror will depend but usually ranges from $10 to $60 per case.

Mock jurors who participate in on-site juries can typically make more due to travel time and gas.

eJury

eJury has been in business since 1999. Its founder is a trial attorney who realized how the internet could be a useful tool in assisting attorneys across the country. When you sign up, you’ll need to complete an oath agreeing that you won’t disclose any information provided. You’ll also need to complete a demographic profile. Most cases pay $5 to $10 and are paid through PayPal.

JuryTest

With JuryTest, mock jurors watch a video of legal arguments. The videos usually last anywhere from 5 to 30 minutes in length. After watching the video, you’ll need to provide feedback. The payments for each case will range from $5 to $50. The amount of the payment will depend on the length of each case. Payment is made either by check or PayPal.

Online Verdict

Online Verdict has been in business since 2004 and was established by trial consultants. Each case review lasts anywhere from 20 to 60 minutes. The pay is $20 to $60 per case review and is paid by check within 1 to 2 weeks after the case review has been completed.

Virtual Jury

Virtual Jury offers tailor-made online focus groups to attorneys needing to forecast jury verdicts. After you register, they’ll contact you when cases become available in your jurisdiction.

JuryTalk 

JuryTalk has been conducting mock jury trials for over 40 years. They conduct both online and on-site mock trials. When you sign up, you must agree to a confidentiality statement.

Final Thoughts on Online Mock Juror Jobs

Remember, these aren’t steady jobs because there won’t always be work, they’re just a way to make some extra cash. 

To increase your chances of earning more, you can sign up for more than one at a time.

Also, keep in mind that all these companies hire you as an independent contractor and not a regular employee. They won’t take taxes out of your pay. 

With some of these companies, should you make more than $600 with any one of them, in a calendar year, they’ll send you a 1099 tax form to file with your yearly taxes. 

Avoid Scams

All the companies listed above are free to sign up. Always remember legitimate companies will never charge you a fee to sign up. If you come across a company requesting a fee, it’s a scam and you should avoid it.
