If you’re looking to work from home and you’re an excellent typist, then transcription may be something for you to check into.

Transcription is usually a job that can be done any time of day, and you can choose to work when it’s convenient for you, as long as you meet any deadlines the company may have.

There are tons of companies that hire transcriptionists to work from home.

What is Transcription?

Transcription is the act of listening to a recording, or a video and transferring it into written or typed form. Everything that is written or typed must be word-for-word, exactly like it’s stated in the recording or video.

There are several different types of transcription, but the most common are general transcription (business), legal transcription, and medical transcription.

Education and Skills Needed

The education needed depends on several factors, but you should at least have a high-school diploma or a GED.

Medical transcription will almost always require completion of a certification program and some companies may require a college degree also.

As far as skills, you must be able to type quickly, usually at least 70 wpm with no errors. Some companies may accept typing speeds lower than that as long as you can type accurately.

Equipment Needed

You’ll need to have a desktop or laptop computer, reliable, high-speed internet service, and a set of headphones.

Most companies will require that you have a foot pedal, but there are some companies that don’t require one.

Pay

The pay for a transcriptionist job will depend on the company and the type of transcription. Medical transcription tends to pay higher because it’s more in-depth and requires special training.

Glassdoor states the average base pay for a general transcriptionist is $26,146. And the hourly pay can range anywhere from $8 to $17 per hour.
