Customers can get faster service through live chat without waiting for a company representative to answer a telephone call. You can go to many brands’ websites these days, and a chat window will open up asking if you need assistance.
Many of these companies are now hiring chat agents to work from home.
Responsibilities of a Remote Chat Agent
The main responsibilities of chat agents are to assist customers with questions they have about a company’s products or services. This can range from helping with online shopping orders, assisting a customer with their banking needs, or troubleshooting technical support issues and helping the customer fix those issues.
Skills and Qualifications Needed
In order to work as a chat agent, you should be able to type quickly and accurately, with a speed of at least 45 correct words per minute. Some companies will require faster typing speeds.
You should have excellent communication and writing skills, along with excellent spelling, punctuation, and grammar.
You should also be able to multi-task because most companies will expect you to take 3 to 4 chats simultaneously.
Previous customer service experience is helpful as well as being tech-savvy.
Equipment Needed
Even though chat jobs don’t involve being on the phone, you will still need a private workspace free from all distractions. This is because you’ll be chatting with several customers at once, and you’ll need to answer them quickly and efficiently.
You’ll also need a computer with fast upload and download speeds, and reliable, high-speed internet service.
For training, you may be required to have a telephone or a webcam.
Pay
The pay will depend on the company, and how detailed the position is. Pay can range from $9 per hour up to $18 per hour, or even more.
Obviously, anything that involves more technical expertise is going to pay higher.

Automattic is a technology company based in San Francisco. They hire remote happiness engineers for customer service and technical support roles to assist their customers with their products such as WordPress.
They provide service to their customers 24/7 via chat, email, and live forums. These roles are technical, so they require experience in HTML, CSS, and WordPress.
You’ve probably heard of Dyson because they manufacture vacuum cleaners and air purifiers among other things.
They regularly hire online advisors to assist customers through live chat and email. They also occasionally hire online chat team supervisors. Both positions are completely remote.
The starting pay for online advisors is $16 per hour.

They hire support specialists to assist customers through live chat and support tickets. They service customers 24 hours a day, 7 days a week and schedules will vary and you’ll need to be flexible with your schedule.
These positions are entry-level. According to their website, the job is open to any country and any city.
Everlane is an online retailer that sells ladies’ apparel and shoes.
They periodically hire customer experience agents to work from home assisting customers with online orders and returns through live chat.
According to Glassdoor’s website, the pay is $14 to $17 per hour.
